No, it is more like a bankcard or a check card. You can use it at stores to pay for the things you buy.  However, you can use only the amount that has been deposited into your card’s account. For example, if you have $75 in your card’s account, you can only buy $75 worth of items.

5. How do prepaid debit cards work?
First you must apply for a prepaid debit card (go to www.BankFreedom.com to enroll). When you receive your card, you have several options to “load” money onto the card.  They include:

  • Cash load at a retail location – Green Dot and MoneyGram offer services that allow you to put money on your prepaid debit card.  Simply go to a Green Dot retailer (find one here http://www.bankfreedom.com/loadcenter.html ) and purchase a MoneyPak.  Follow the instructions on the MoneyPak to load up to $500 cash on your prepaid debit card.
  • Direct Deposit – You can have payroll, government benefits, or child support check directly deposited on your prepaid debit card.
  • Online – Most prepaid debit cards offer money loading from a connected bank account.  Go to www.BankFreedom.com and click “Account Login” to access and set up a linked bank account.  Once established, you can move money from your bank account to your card.

6. Do I need a PIN (Personal Identification Number) to use prepaid debit cards?
You do not need a PIN to buy items if the store has you sign the receipt. Some stores require a PIN instead of your signature. You need to use a PIN to get cash at ATMs. You will choose your own PIN when you call to activate your prepaid debit card.
You will get complete instructions with the card when it is mailed to you.
